Description

Tassir Voryn is a sun-browned Khaladi man in his late thirties, slight of build, with close-cut black hair already thinning at the temples and dark, careful eyes. He dresses in plain, scrupulously clean linen — undyed tunic, indigo sash, soft leather work-shoes — the deliberate plainness of a man who could afford better but refuses on principle. He carries a small leather satchel of folded papers everywhere, and a single Lyceum stylus-pin tucked under his collar where most would not see it.

Personality

He is precise, soft-spoken, and almost always the calmest person in the room. He listens longer than he speaks, and when he speaks he tends to quote the same Lyceum texts the Senate uses to justify itself, redirected. He is patient with grievance and impatient with sentiment — a Lowwater grandmother's complaint will get a full hearing; a guildmate's anger at "the rich" will get a flat correction about which guilds actually run the Senate.

Role

Tassir is the political head of Lowwater, the under-city quarter beneath Khasim's Crown's lower terraces. He does not call himself a leader; the Cisternward elders call him kheram — "the one who reads back" — and the title has stuck. His authority is informal but uncontested: every faction in Lowwater that wants something from the upper city eventually goes through him.

Background

Tassir was born in Lowwater to the Cisternward Guild, the small, despised, indispensable guild that maintains Khasim's Crown's underground cisterns and brine outflows. The Cisternwards rarely earn a Lyceum seat — their guild rolls are too small to clear a whole share, and the Remainder Draw lottery had not picked one of theirs in roughly thirty years before Tassir's name came out of it.

He spent seven years at the Lyceum, first in his class on imperial history, second on statecraft. He sat the Senate Trial all four eligible years (years seven through ten) and failed on his fourth attempt. He graduated with the highest honors a non-Senator can hold, was offered three sinecure posts in the Lyceum's archive bureaucracy, and turned them all down. He went home to Lowwater the next morning and has not crossed back into the upper terraces in any official capacity since.

He has spent the years since organizing — quietly at first, then less so. The Cisternward Guild gave him their petitioner's seat. The smaller guilds that share the under-terraces (saltdrawers, dye-runners, cistern-cleaners, gravediggers) gave him theirs in turn. Lowwater speaks for itself in the Senate's hearing rooms now, when it speaks at all, through Tassir's papers.

The party may meet him in the course of tracking "Zef" into Lowwater, or through one of House Anuvesh's quieter contacts.

Story

The party finally caught up with Tassir in Session 47 - The Word That Closes, beneath the Colosseum with Mira and the Oasis Vault weapon; Momeline cut him down, and his dying act was to crush a slaad control crystal and loose the slaads into the packed stadium above.
