Sirocco Wardens are the standing force of Khasim's Crown, answerable to the High Magisters and trained at the Lyceum alongside the city's archivists and clerks. They walk the streets, the oases and the inner edge of the dome in sand-coloured layered coats cut for heat and blown grit, and a Warden on dome duty is as much a lookout as a soldier.
Their oldest duty is also their hardest: holding the dome's edge against the Sandwalkers that batter at it in raids that have worsened steadily over the last several years. Wardens rotate through that posting rather than volunteering for it, and the ones who have stood a bad night at the edge are easy to pick out.
