Description

Mama Sherahn Anuvesh is a small, sun-browned woman in her early seventies, matriarch of House Anuvesh and proprietor of The Open Door. Her iron-grey hair is twisted into a single thick braid that falls past her hip; her eyes are the deep brown of well-kept dates. She moves slowly but never hesitantly, with the economy of someone who has run the same inn for forty-six years.

She wears layered linen in faded indigo and saffron, sleeves rolled to the elbow no matter the hour, and a heavy ring of brass keys at her belt that she never seems to consult. She knows where every door is.

Personality

Sherahn keeps her words short and her welcomes long. She does not fuss over guests, but she remembers the names of their grandparents, the dish they refused last time, and the language they speak in their sleep. She runs the inn the way her grandmother taught her: feed first, ask later, never ask twice.

She is unhurried, unflappable, and not at all sentimental. She has buried two husbands, three siblings, and more guests than she will say. When she gives advice, it tends to be a single sentence — the rest of the conversation is yours.

Role in Society

Sherahn heads House Anuvesh and runs The Open Door, the city's de facto safe harbor for foreign-born residents. Most halflings, hill-dwarves, and stranded Lusterians who live in Khasim's Crown long-term passed through her gate at least once.

She is on cordial but distant terms with the Senate. At least three sitting High Magisters stayed under her roof as students and owe her favors. She does not call them in.

Story

Milo arrived at the Open Door's gate in his late teens — half-dead from the desert, no Khaladi, no warrant, no story he was willing to tell. Sherahn fed him, gave him a bed, and at the next Remainder Draw sponsored his Lyceum entrance through Anuvesh's seat. He has been a member of the house for nearly twenty years.
