Description
High Magister Aleyna Sokari is a tall, narrow woman in her late sixties, in her fifth and final year on the council. She wears the deep slate robes of a senior magister, severe and unornamented, with a single silver pin at the throat shaped like the closed eye of the Senate seal. Her grey hair is cropped close to the skull. She does not smile in council, and rarely outside it.
She speaks with a slow deliberation that some mistake for hesitation; in her thirty-five years at the Lyceum and on the floor of the Senate, no one has heard her say a sentence she did not mean.
Role
Sokari is the senior Magister and current chair of the council. Her seat falls open at the end of this year, and the Senate has already begun the quiet politicking around her successor. Her portfolio across her five years has run heavily toward interior policy and city continuity: the laws that govern the dome, the warrant system, the oathbands, the Sirocco Wardens' standing orders.
She is not loved. She is respected by her colleagues and feared by her juniors. Her judgments are conservative, slow, and reliably sound.
Personality
Sokari believes Khasim's Crown is alive only because it is hidden, and that every breach of the dome's secrecy is a small death. She does not enjoy this belief. She holds it because she has read every record in the Lyceum's continuity archive and finds no other reading defensible.
She is rigorously fair. She does not punish dissenters; she simply outwaits them. In thirty years of Senate service she has never been overruled on a matter of dome policy.
